The Wolves on Wheels Sustrans Ranger Group

Wolves on Wheels Cycle Campaign has a Sustrans Community Ranger Group. The Wolves on Wheels Ranger group is responsible for keeping an eye on National Cycle Network Route 81 (or NCN81 for short) from Smethwick to Wolverampton to Telford.

The route follows canal towpaths along the Birmingham Main Canal to Wolverhampton Broad Street Basin down the 21 Locks to Aldersley Junction, along the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal to Autherley Junction, up the east bank of the Shropshire Union canal to Pendeford Mil Road. From here the route joins a signposted route through Bilbrook.

At present the Staffs County Council signing ends at Sandy Lane. The Route is supposed to direct a rider around Codsall so they reach Moathouse Lane. They turn left out of Moathose Lane and right into Hushpins Lane / Beamish Lane . At County Lane they reach the "Promised Land" - cycle-friendly Shropshire. NCN81 visits Albrighton, Cosford and The RAF Museum. It continues to Shifnal and Telford. The route passes through Wroxeter Roman City and Shrewsbury on its way to Llanidloes, Aberystwyth and Cardigan (Aberteifi).

There is also in Wolverhampton a "Braid" of Route 81 called the Cross-City Route. This means that NCN81 signs appear on e.g. Lichfield Street and around West Park. Sustrans www.sustrans.org.uk/ is short for Sustainable Transport. The charity has many projects but is most famous for the National Cycle Network, which opened its first 5,000 miles in the year 2000 and has currently over 10,000 miles open .
The Network consists of off-road routes and selected minor roads in the country, together with urban routes improved to help cyclists.
Sustrans is a charitable body funded by subscriptions, donations and lottery grants. Members of the public can become Supporters. Having only a small paid staff, Sustrans started a programme of volunteer Rangers in 1998 to look after the Network day-to-day. There are now over 2000 Rangers all over the UK.
Where a large number have volunteered in one area, they are encouraged to form a local group to work together.
In Wolverhampton this Ranger Group is part of Wolves On Wheels Cycle Campaign and looks after the route between Birmingham and Telford.
